What does it mean to be a christian

What does it mean to be a Christian?

Millions of people in the United States call themselves Christians.  Some are very devout, and to others, it's more of an association with Jesus than anything else.

So - how do we know?  How can we know FOR SURE that we are true Christians?  How can we know FOR SURE that we're living out the life that Jesus calls us to?  How can we make sure that we're not just following a feeling or that we're not deceiving ourselves?  Don't we want to make sure that we're in line with what Jesus taught and not just some watered-down version of what the world calls "Christianity"?

The answer to this question (and it's a VERY important question) demands that we turn to the bible - and the bible alone to learn what Jesus taught.

Matthew 28:19-20 says "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

The question we should start with on this journey is "have I ever been taught how to be a disciple"?  If Jesus said "go and make disciples" - it stands to reason that each and every one of us who claim Christianity as our own must be taught to first, to be "disciples".  If your answer is "no" - you've never been taught what it means (according to Jesus) to be a disciple - we'd love to meet up to teach you what the bible says about it all.

The King & His Kingdom

When Jesus came to earth, he didn't come to bring a church, he came to bring a kingdom.

Mark 1:14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Before calling anyone to follow him, before he even met those who would become his apostles, Jesus announced that God's Kingdom had come near.  From this point on, Jesus would talk about the kingdom over 100 times and after he rose from the dead, he spent 40 days with his followers and "spoke about the kingdom of God."

The question needs to be asked, why isn't the church more focused on the kingdom of God than it is?  In our age, we hear sermon after sermon about salvation and about what God has in store for his people.  While these things are important, they don't seem to have been Jesus's focus.

Join us over the next few weeks (possibly months) as we delve into the Kingdom & what it means to live as citizens of the kingdom!
